Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Whether you're far away from family, don't have time to cook an elaborate meal or are just looking to be social this Thanksgiving, there are plenty of options in Clovis and Portales to eat a traditional meal with friends, for free.
• In Clovis, Lighthouse Mission will hold a free citywide Thanksgiving banquet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 407 L. Casillas Blvd. This is the eighth year in a row the mission has held a meal on Thanksgiving Day to help ensure everyone has somewhere to eat during the holiday.
"This is a time to be thankful and a time for people to know that we care about them," said Angela Gomez of Lighthouse Mission.
For those that can't make it out to the meal, such as elderly or handicapped, Lighthouse will be delivering meals during the day. Those interested can call 575-762-1933 for more information.
n Hope Children's Home in Clovis will also be opening its doors for any police officers, firefighters, EMTs, active-duty military personnel or first responders who want to come share Thanksgiving dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 2210 Mabry Dr.
"It's to give back to those who serve all the time, like first responders and such that might have to work on that day," said Ed Hofknecht of Hope Children's Home. "They can sit down and eat with us or grab a plate to go."
• The 20th annual Portales Community Outreach Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Memorial Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Seventh and Abilene. The dinner, also free, is community-driven with citizens and groups from all over Portales contributing.
"We encourage everyone to come out. It's a great social time for everyone to come and get out of the house," said Joe Parie, an organizer. "We're just a bunch of people who have wanted to put this on over the last 20 years. We're all donors, even if it's through the Methodist church, the Baptist churches, the Mormon church, we just all want to come together."
There will also be meal deliveries from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the handicapped or elderly in Portales that cannot attend. For more information or to place an order, call 575-356-4241 by noon today.
Alongside the dinner will be a winter coat drive where attendees can pick up or donate winter clothing and blankets.
