CLOVIS — The Curry County Commission will consider a retainer agreement for lawsuits dealing with groundwater contamination adjacent to Cannon Air Force Base when it meets Tuesday morning.
The commissioners will consider an agreement with Napoli Shkolnik at its 9 a.m. meeting at the Curry County Administrative Complex. The firm is also representing Art and Renee Schaap in their claim against the United States, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Air Force for the use of firefighting foam that contained perfluorooctanoic acid (“PFOA”) and/or perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (“PFOS”).
The county has maintained a desire for legal action on the matter, noting groundwater contamination has adverse effects on county land and its tax base.
Other items on the agenda include:
• An executive session for the purchase, acquisition or disposal of property.
• An agreement with Global Spectra for Curry County Events Center management will be considered. The agreement calls for the county to pay a $7,000 monthly management fee, 20% of gross revenue generated by the facility in excess of $600,000 and up to $12,000 in other incentives.
• The commission will consider a resolution for a disaster declaration from the heavy rainfall Oct. 1-3. According to the resolution, the damage the rains caused to county roads overwhelmed the county’s resources.
• A request to accept a road viewer report recommending closure of Curry Road 38 from Curry Road E to Curry Road F.
• Rescheduling of the March 3 commission meeting to March 12 to canvass municipal elections, cancellation of the June 16 meeting, calling a special meeting June 10 to canvass the 2020 primary and calling a special meeting Nov. 10 to canvass the 2020 general election.
• Proclamations honoring the Melrose football team for its eight-man football championship, honoring the Texico volleyball team for its Class 2A championship and declaring Dec. 1-7 as National Influenza Vaccination Week.
