RIO RANCHO — Clovis High’s girls flipped the script in the second half of Tuesday’s season opener against Cleveland. Trouble was, the Lady Wildcats had much too big a hole to escape.
The Storm held the Lady Cats to just nine first-half points and cruised to a 38-27 victory, although Clovis returned the favor by holding Cleveland to nine points over the final two stanzas.
“The first half, we couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn,” Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed said. “They went on an 8-0 run right at the end of the half (for a 29-9 lead).”
Clovis outscored Cleveland 10-4 in the third period, but simply could never get over the top.
“The second half we played better,” Reed said. “We actually cut the lead to seven at one point, but we couldn’t get it any closer.”
Sophomore post Allyson Frank was the only player in double figures for either team, finishing with 12 points for the Storm. Meantime, senior guard Aydan Everett led the Lady Cats with seven points, including one of the team’s three baskets from 3-point range.
Reed said his squad played without 5-foot-11 junior post Hanna Nussbaumer due to a knee injury.
He is hopeful she will be available when the Lady Cats open their home schedule with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday against Lubbock Estacado at Rock Staubus Gym.
