News Release: ENMU running back, kicker honored

Here is a Dec. 6, 2019, news release from Eastern New Mexico University’s athletics department:

PORTALES, N.M. - Eastern New Mexico seniors Paul Terry and Tyler Vargas have been named 2019 D2CCA All-Super Region Four Second Team selections.

Terry and Vargas add this year's honor to a long list of accolades for both seniors as Terry was named a two-time All-LSC First Team selection in 2018 and 2019 and Vargas has now been named to an all-region team three different occasions throughout his career. Terry and Vargas are two of 22 athletes to represent the Lone Star Conference on either all-region team, nine more than the next closest conference.

Terry broke the single season rushing record for Eastern New Mexico, amassing 1,778 yards, and rushed for 100 yards or more in all but one game this season. The Amarillo, Texas native totaled the second highest rushing mark in all of Division II football and finished the 2019 regular season with 14 rushing scores.

He broke and then matched the single game carries record for the program with 40 attempts against Midwestern State and Angelo State and rushed for over 200 yards in both of those contests. Terry led the LSC in rushing yards and averaged the highest rushing total per game in Eastern New Mexico history with an average of 161.6 yards a contest.

A 2018 D2CCA All-Super Region Four First Team selection, Terry was edged out for first team honors this season by Minnesota State-Makato's Nate Gunn and Tarleton State's Daniel McCants.

Vargas was also a 2018 D2CCA All-Super Region Four performer, earning third team honors a season ago, and elevated his play for the 2019 campaign. Vargas was a 2019 All-LSC First Team selection as a placekicker and an All-LSC Second Team selection as a punter after finishing fifth in the conference in scoring with 80 points and leading the league with 13 made field goals on the year.

The San Diego, Calif. native converted on 13-of-17 field goals throughout the regular season and made all but one of his PAT attempts. He converted on what would end up being two game winning field goals this season with a 23-yard field goal against Midwestern State and a 39-yard field goal in overtime against #21 Angelo State.

Terry and Vargas will lead Eastern New Mexico into the 2019 Heritage Bowl against Southern Arkansas on Dec. 7th looking to match the second-highest win total in program history.
