Here is a Dec. 4, 2019, news release from the New Mexico Activities Association:

CLASSIFICATION & ALIGNMENT:

2020-2022 BLOCK

Summary of Changes:

1. In all sports but football, 3 schools moved up in classification – Los Lunas, Newcomb, and Tatum.

2. In the sport of football, Santa Fe High School and Newcomb moved up in classification.

3. Hope Christian (4A) and Mesa Vista (2A) requested to play up.

4. In all sports but football, 9 schools are moving down in classification - Tularosa, Laguna Acoma,

Shiprock Northwest, Ramah, Tse’ Yi’ Gai, Mesilla Valley, Coronado, Alamo Navajo, and

Magdalena

5. In the sport of football, Mayfield, Valencia, Tularosa, and Laguna Acoma moved down in

classification.

6. There is one three-team district in 3A basketball, track & field, and volleyball – Dexter, NMMI,

Tucumcari.

7. There is one three-team district in 2A football – Clayton, Santa Rosa, and Texico.

8. In 2A baseball, there are multiple three-team districts. Do we combine District 1/2 and District

3/4?

9. San Jon and Grady will no longer be in a co-op.

10. Legacy Academy is the newest member school.

11. Desert Academy and Santa Fe Prep are the only private schools affected by the multiplier.

12. NMMI will compete in girls’ sports, but we do not know the specific sports as of yet.

13. Girls Wrestling will be one class and separated into two districts.

14. If there is not an increase in wrestling participation in A-3A after this two-year block, the staff

recommends that we consider A-4A in the future.

15. The feasibility of continuing with an 8-man football classification in future years will be reviewed

and evaluated throughout the two-year block.

16. The Swimming and Diving district alignment is not ready to present. Staff will be meeting with

the Sports Specific Committee next month and a proposal will be brought back in February.

17. The PED only requires public schools to submit 40/80 day counts, thus there is no process to

formally confirm enrollment numbers for private, boarding, and BIE schools.
