NEW HOME, Texas — Junior Jonathan Mora scored 13 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds left, to lift Farwell’s boys past host New Home 40-39 in Thursday’s opener of the Leopards’ three-day tournament.

New Home (2-2), which got 14 points from junior guard Ryan Weeks, erased a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring Farwell 16-6 in the third quarter. Mora was the only player in double figures for the Steers.

Later Thursday, Farwell improved to 3-3 for the season with a 65-53 win over Forsan (3-3). Mora and junior Austin Hester each scored 12 points for the Steers, who took control by outscoring the Buffaloes 37-17 over the middle two quarters. Sophomores Grayson Waldrop and Leo Nunez added 10 points apiece for Farwell.

Meantime, Forsan put three players in double figures — senior Zane Riffe (16), sophomore Cayden Moran (13) and senior Jonathon Gabehart (10).

The Steers were slated to face Spur on Friday morning, then play twice on Saturday to conclude the event.

Farwell girls 63, New Home 55: The Lady Blue took control with a 17-5 second-quarter run and won handily behind 19 points from junior guard Presley Agee and 15 from senior center Ainsley Actkinson.

The Lady Leopards (6-2), whose roster includes five freshmen and three sophomores, got a game-high 30 points from freshman forward Kelby Baccus while another freshman, Morgan Addison, added 11.

Farwell was slated to finish the event with two games on Friday and another on Saturday.

Boys

Elida 51, Portales JV 44: Senior guards Tyce Delk and Colton Ferguson scored 19 and 11 points, respectively, and the Tigers (2-0) pulled away in the final quarter to beat the Rams.

Jude Urioste had 18 points and Adrian Ontiveros tallied 13 points for Portales JV (1-2).

Dora 54, Roy/Mosquero 33: The host Coyotes opened their season with a dominating victory as senior Joe Urioste collected 15 points. Meantime, sophomore Cache Skelley and senior Austen Jones had 10 each, and senior Haiden Padgett scored nine.

Girls

Portales JV 68, Elida 30: The Lady Rams took control early and never looked back in dropping Elida to 0-2 for the season.

Junior Tiffany Ortega scored 11 points for the Lady Tigers while three others had six — junior Maislyn Ferguson, freshman Raquel Rogers and eighth-grader Taylea Nelson.

Roy/Mosquero 55, Dora 38: The Lady Longhorns (2-0) jumped out to a 15-4 first-quarter lead and cruised behind 20 points from junior Riley Clavel and 18 from freshman Tanna Crisp.

Senior Randi Crandall led Dora (0-1) with 11 points, and senior Makayla Burnett added nine.

Boys

Grady 53, Quemado 50, OT: Down by 16 points in the second half, the Bronchos roared from behind to catch Eagles in regulation, then outscored them 7-4 in the extra session.

Senior forward Chisum Rush tallied 19 points and sophomore guard Dustin Bryant had 15 for the Bronchos (2-1). D.J. Mathis led Quemado (1-1) with 13 points.

Tatum 74, Clovis Christian 41: The Coyotes stormed to a 26-9 lead at the quarter and never looked back in their season opener, getting 22 points from senior guard Sebastian Jimenez and 20 from sophomore guard Hayden Mullins.

Junior forward Tyler Lingnau posted 10 points for the Eagles (1-2), while freshman point guard Carter Teune added nine.

Mountainair 50, Floyd 37: The Mustangs (1-1) held Floyd to three points in the opening segment, then broke the game open with a 17-6 spurt in the third period for a 20-point lead. Juniors Dylan Greene (17) , Cade Brazil (15) and Gabe Padilla (14) combined for all but four of Mountainair’s points, while juniors Chance Essary and Eli Terry finished with eight points each for the Broncos (0-1).

Melrose 65, Cliff 23: Junior post Tate Sorgen scored 24 points and senior guard Dylan Valentine added 20 as the Buffaloes built a 29-point halftime lead in their season opener against the Cowboys (0-2).

Girls

Quemado 40, Floyd 26: Leading by just two points at halftime, the Lady Eagles outscored Floyd 24-12 in the second half to pull away.

Senior Siera Green had 13 points and junior Ashanti Mathis 12 for Quemado (2-0). The Lady Bronchos were led by senior Anahi Chavez with seven points.

Clovis Christian 47, Tatum 42: After a seesaw struggle which saw the teams separated by one point after each of the first three quarters, the Lady Eagles (2-1) finally inched ahead for some breathing room in the final stanza.

Sisters Lola and Sofia DeGroot scored 12 points each for CCS (2-1), including a pair of 3s by Sofia DeGroot. Topping the Lady Coyotes (0-1) was Ashlyn Griffin with 20 points.

Melrose 65, Mountainair 23: Senior forward Shannon May’s 20 points led three Lady Buffs in double figures in a dominating season-opening win over the xxxx. Senior guard Nataley Mondragon chipped in 19 points and junior forward Hailey Martin 10 as Melrose built a 29-point halftime lead.

Junior Aniston Roberts was the high scorer for the Lady Mustangs (1-1) with six points.

Grady 55, Cliff 32: Junior Teryn Foote had 14 points and senior Divinity Roberts added 12, including a trio of 3-pointers, as the Lady Bronchos built a 30-point lead through three stanzas and coasted to their third win in three outings. Sophomore Kristen Horn had nine points for the Cowgirls (1-2).
