Man arrested following chase, shots reported

CLOVIS - A Clovis man was arrested Friday morning following a high speed chase with numerous shots fired, according to the Clovis Police Department.

Jeremy Banning, 20, was booked into the Curry County Adult Detention Center Friday morning on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

No injuries were reported.

According to a criminal complaint filed Friday in Curry County Magistrate Court:

• At about 4:45 a.m., Lt. Robbie Telles was patrolling near the intersection of 10th and Walnut streets when he noticed a dark-colored sport utility vehicle turn toward his unit. Believing it to be a Chevy Traverse reported stolen recently, Telles turned around to follow the suspect and try to run the plate.

• The suspect vehicle ignored a stop sign, and Telles soon heard six to seven gunshots he believed came from the vehicle and began a pursuit. Another 10 to 12 gunshots were heard from the vehicle as the pursuit continued, with debris and glass from the vehicle hitting the patrol unit.

• The pursuit continued through the city and ended near the railroad track crossing on MLK. Two suspects abandoned the still-moving vehicle and ran in separate directions. One suspect, identified as Banning, was captured and two firearms were recovered. The other, a man wearing a black jacket, black jeans and a black bandana across his face, ran north to a chain link fence. No further reference was made to him in the report.

• The suspect vehicle was a Chevrolet Trax with multiple bullet holes to the rear windscreen and tailgate and expended shell casings inside the vehicle. Officers made contact with the registered owners of the vehicle, who had not reported the vehicle stolen but said it had been missing since 9 p.m. the previous night.

Court records did not indicate an attorney for Banning.
