Gattis finishes second in tournament

The Gattis Cubs seventh-grade boys team took second place in a tournament held Jan. 16 and Jan. 18 at Marshall Middle School to improve to 8-6.

The first game was a 23-22 win over Texico on Joel Thomas’ free throw with 4.8 seconds remaining. Quinn Culiver had 12 to lead the Cubs. Kalil Torres-Pierre added 10.

The second game was a 52-24 loss to Portales A which saw Torres-Pierre score 11.

The third game was a 33-25 win over Portales B. Peyton Harris scored seven to lead the Cubs.

Yucca splits games at Marshall tourney

The Yucca seventh-grade boys also participated in the tournament, falling to Portales 49-31 Jan. 16 and beating Texico 33-24 on Jan. 18.

Cole Cabeldue had 18 points against Portales, while Brayden Eldridge added 10 for the Chaps.

Against Texico, Eldridge had 12 points to lead the way.

In girls action for Yucca this last week, the seventh-grade girls defeated Marshall 25-18 on Thursday.
