Information on growing orchids and using a sticky back stabilizer in quilting will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Thursday (all times Mountain).
Heddy Saltz is going to share lots of tips for growing orchids, and she says these beautiful plants can even be grown in the southwest. She’ll show how to re-pot an orchid, how and when to water them, and she’ll also let you know what to do to ensure a long life for these delicate flowers. Saltz lives in Hondo.
Eric Drexler will demonstrate thread sketching by using Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solve to run through a printer. This prints the design onto a sticky back stabilizer that can be placed on a quilt top. After stitching, you simply wash the quilt, and the pattern and stabilizer dissolve away. He’s with Sulky of America and resides in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Information on reducing allergens in the home, using a new presser foot on the market and creating a one-of-a-kind needlepoint design will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” noon Tuesday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Did you know you may be sleeping with over 2 million dust mites in your bed every night? Laura Dellutri will show some products on the market to help reduce allergens in the home. She is a life and style expert with Healthy Housekeeper, Inc. in Overland Park, Kansas.
Clare Rowley is an inventor and owner of Creative Feet, and she’s going to show how to sew on decorative trims, like ribbons, onto a piece of fabric, using the Sequins ‘n ribbon foot that she invented to sew down sequins. This is especially useful when making small items, like doll clothes. She lives in Prescott Valley, Arizona.
Sandy Grossman-Morris is going to show how a plaid needlepoint design is created by repeating certain “sets” of numbers that can be individualized for each person. This results in a one-of-a-kind design. Her company is Sandy Grossman-Morris Design in Brentwood, California.
Dust mite tips
Cover (encase) your bedding with allergen protective coverings. Tape the zippers of the protective coverings. Wash your sheets and pillowcases in hot (130+ degree) water weekly. Clean carpets and rugs or treat them with Dust mite-Allergen Spray or tannic acid. Hire only Certified Carpet Cleaners with the PCCA designation. Routinely apply 3M Scotchgard carpet protector on your carpets to keep moisture from getting into the pad when spills occur. Vacuum with a true HEPA, ULNA or Central Vacuum System regularly. Maintain indoor humidity below 50%. Reduced dust equals reduced dust mites! Avoid upholstered furniture and dust collecting items within the home which cannot be washed. Keep clothing tucked away in closets and drawers and keep the closet doors shut. Use electrostatic and high filtration (at least .3 microns) furnace and air conditioner filters and change them monthly. Put the pillows in zippered dust proof encasings and/or wash the pillows weekly with the bedding. Avoid lying on upholstered furniture or on your carpets. It’s disgusting, but dust mites feed on the dead skin cells we leave behind.
