Former Ram Howard heading to Browns

CLEVELAND — A former Portales Ram is joining the fold with the Cleveland Browns, as Jeff Howard will reportedly become the team’s defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator.

The news was first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.

Howard, a 2001 graduate, had been with the Minnesota Vikings the last seven seasons.

There will be a few familiar faces for Howard, an All-American linebacker at Eastern New Mexico University. Howard worked for seven years with new Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, the Vikings’ offensive coordinator last season. Incoming Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods, currently an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers, was with Minnesota when Howard was first hired as an assistant to the head coach in 2013.

Howard, inducted into ENMU’s Hall of honors in 2011, compiled three All-American honors and a pair of All-Lone Star Conference South selections over his time with the Greyhounds.

As a senior, Howard had a team-high 115 tackles with 4.5 sacks, along with a pair of forced fumbles and recoveries.
