Matthews named volunteer of year

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau named Roosevelt County’s Deveri Matthews as its volunteer of the year during its annual meeting, according to a bureau release.

Matthews and her husband have been in Portales eight years and have 5,000 head between a pair of dairies.

For the past six years, Matthews has coordinated trips to her dairy for area homeschooled children and this year hosted a petting zoo at her home. She said in the release she is often surprised and excited to see parents who learn just as much as their children during the visits.

The bureau includes more than 19,000 members that are farmers and ranchers and citizens with an interest in property rights.
