Weekend prep roundup: Broncho boys pull rout over Hondo

HONDO — The Grady boys basketball team got back on the winning track on Saturday night — and in a big way.

Losers of three in a row in rugged District 6-1A, the Bronchos made short work of host Hondo, building a 12-point lead after one quarter and cruising to an 80-48 non-district victory.

Junior Isaiah Mitchell (25 points), senior Chisum Rush (21) and junior Chad Beccera (16) did for most of the damage for Grady (10-9). Meantime, senior Thomas Hernandez scored 16 points for the Eagles (14-8).

In the girls matchup, Grady led most of the way, but Hondo overtook the Lady Bronchos in the final three minutes to pull out a 44-40 victory.

Juniors Kyra Lucero and Kate Cooper scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, for the Lady Eagles (13-9), while junior Teryn Foote had 19 points for Grady (6-13).

In other action on Saturday night:

Melrose boys 66, Cimarron 27 — The Class 1A top-ranked Buffaloes improved to 20-1, blowing out to a 27-0 lead at the end of one against the Rams (10-7).

Eight players scored for Melrose, all with at least six points and led by juniors Trace Jackson with 11 and Tate Sorgen with 10. For the Rams, senior Cullen O’Neill scored 18 points.

Melrose cruised to a 58-14 victory over Cimarron in the girls matchup.

Tatum 49, Floyd girls 38 — The teams were tied 16-16 at halftime, but the Lady Coyotes went on a 22-10 run in the third quarter and held off a late Floyd rally in District 4-1A.

Freshman Ciera Jenkins netted 17 points and sophomore Kheyenne Coombes chipped in 10 for Tatum (14-8, 5-1). Freshman Catelyn Breshears put in 14 points for the Lady Bronchos (5-12, 3-3), with senior Anahi Chavez tossing in 10.

Tatum 60, Floyd boys 27 — The district-leading Coyotes (16-6, 6-0) dominated the first three quarters and cruised behind 23 points from 6-foot-4 freshman Mason Brown, who combined with junior Kivan Cardenas (18) and senior Sebastian Jimenez (15) for all but four of Tatum’s points.

Senior Cobe Correa led the Broncos (2-16,1-5) with eight points, and junior Juan Alba-Beltran added seven.

Logan 73, Clovis Christian boys 64 — The host Longhorns held on late in a competitive District 6-1A matchup as junior Dante Sanchez scored 26 points — including a 3-pointer and 23-of-26 from the free throw line.

Juniors Wyatt Wright and Garrett Bollinger knocked in 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Longhorns (13-10, 3-3). Junior Tyler Lingnau scored 33 points and junior Dawson Teune added 10 for the Eagles (9-13, 0-5).

Logan 62, CCS girls 12 — The top-ranked Lady Longhorns bolted to a 17-5 first quarter lead and improved to 20-3 overall (6-0 district) behind 24 points from senior Karli Webb. Nine players scored for Logan.

The Lady Eagles (13-9, 1-4) were led by seven points from junior Lola DeGroot.
