HOBBS — It was just another day on the court for the Hobbs girls’ basketball team Friday night as the Lady Eagles did what they have done all year, win. The Lady Eagles latest victim was Clovis. Hobbs beat the visiting Lady Wildcats 57-22.
“We didn’t play good at all,” Clovis coach Jeff Reed said. “Right from the very beginning, Hobbs put the pressure on us and we couldn’t handle the pressure. We knew it was coming and there was nothing we could do about it.”
Wisdom Anthony dominated on the court for the Lady Eagles. The Hobbs freshman singlehandedly outscored the entire Clovis team by herself. Anthony finished the night with 24 points, two more than Clovis scored (22) as a team. Additionally, with 4:25 left in the third quarter, Anthony had more points by herself (14) than Clovis had for the entire game (13), at that point.
Anthony’s lead would last for another four minutes before the Lady Wildcats would get a layup with 26 seconds left in the quarter.
Anthony drained four of her six three-pointers in the third quarter. The freshman helped the Lady Eagles to a 22-point quarter while holding Clovis to just four points. Heading into the fourth quarter, Hobbs led 54-15.
“I don’t expect her to get six threes every night,” Hobbs coach Joe Carpenter said. “But I expect her to score every night and to rebound and get steals like she did tonight She is an All-State player in my eyes. She is one of the best players in the state of New Mexico, even as a freshman.”
When the game started, it was actually close, for a few minutes. The Lady Eagles took a 4-0 lead and then pushed it to 6-2 before Clovis battled back and getting within one point, 6-5, of Hobbs with 4:23 left in the first. But that was as close as the Lady Eagles would allow the visiting team.
The Lady Eagles responded with a 10-0 run before going into the second quarter leading 16-6. Hobbs scored another 16 points in the second.
With the loss, the Lady Wildcats fall to 10-14 on the season and 2-2 in District 4-5A. Clovis will now head to Carlsbad before closing out its regular season with a home game against Roswell.
“We had a good game-plan against Carlsbad the first time,” Reed said. “We followed the game-plan – and of course Carlsbad doesn’t pressure like Hobbs does, so we were able to run our offense and doing things a little bit better. We have to do that again to beat Carlsbad, which is going to be a lot tougher in Carlsbad.”
