Patriots sweep Hounds in LSC baseball series

TYLER, Texas — Texas-Tyler rode home runs from Jordan Gochenour and Tanner Roach to a big early lead and completed a four-game Lone Star Conference baseball series sweep against Eastern New Mexico University on Sunday with a 9-1 rout.

On Saturday, the Patriots (9-1, 9-1 LSC) took a pair of seven-inning games from the Greyhounds, winning the opener 6-0 behind a no-hitter from senior left-hander Reagan MacDonald before taking the nightcap 3-1. In the four games, Tyler outscored ENMU 27-8.

Gochenour, a sophomore right fielder, drilled a two-run homer in the first inning before Roach, a junior shortstop, made it 5-0 with a two-out, three-run shot in the second against ENMU starter Joel Torres (0-2). Tyler was the 2018 NCAA Division III national champion and is in its first year of competition in Division II and the LSC.

Junior right-hander Jacob Blatney (2-0) worked six innings for the Patriots (9-1, 9-1 LSC), allowing three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Greyhounds (1-9, 1-9) got on the board in the seventh on a one-out, bases-loaded single by Alex Kuhn, but Josh Garza took over for Blaine Parker at that point and got the Hounds’ Malcolm Smith to hit into a fly-ball double play — Tyler’s third of the game — with center fielder Cody Windisch throwing out ENMU’s Ryan Anderson trying to tag and score from third.

Second baseman Trevor Moses went 2-for-4 for the Hounds, who finished with seven hits.

ENMU returns to Greyhound Field this weekend for a four-game series against Tarleton State, beginning with a 4 p.m. contest on Friday.

Texas-Tyler 6, ENMU 0 (Saturday, Game 1) — McDonald struck out 10 and faced just one batter over the minimum over his seven innings.

Junior Lukas Polanco’s two-run homer got the Patriots on the board in the second inning, and they added another tally in the frame. Junior Kyle McShaffry hit a two-run double in the fifth and Gochenour doubled home a run in the sixth.

Starter Ethan Coombes (0-2) went five innings for the Hounds, allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Texas-Tyler 3, ENMU 1 (Saturday, Game 2) — The Hounds pulled even 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Smith singled, took second on a throwing error and scored on a single to right by shortstop Daniel Hunt off starter Garrett Arredondo. Left-hander Max Page (2-0) took over with the bases loaded and two out and retired Blake Frye on a pop fly to short right.

With two out in the bottom half, No. 9 hitter Corbin Geisendorff doubled and scored on a single by Roach to put Tyler back in front. The Patriots added an insurance run in the fifth on McShaffry’s solo homer to right, his first of the season.

Josh Lewis (1-2) went five innings for ENMU, allowing seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Meantime, sophomore right-hander Matthew McMillan worked the final two innings for Tyler to earn his second save.
