Work to begin on four Texas roadways

SUDAN — The Texas Department of Transportation will begin work Monday on projects to improve four roadways that many local travelers to Lubbock and Amarillo and most residents of Farwell will surely notice.

According to a pair of releases from TXDOT’s Lubbock district, work by Johnson Bros. Corporation of Roanoke, Texas, will include the following roads:

• US 60, for seven miles from the New Mexico state line to five miles west of Bovina

• US 84, from west of the Sudan city limits to Dean Avenue

• US 385. from SH 114 to Houston Street in Levelland and from Houston Street to FM 300

• US 70, from the New Mexico state line to east of the Farwell city limits

The first is part of a $25.5 million project to also improve drainage, culverts and guardrails. The last three are part of a $15.5 million project for roadway repair, new road surfaces and enhancements to sidewalks, ramps and traffic signals.

“The ($15.5 million) project will make needed improvements to each roadway. Work crews are scheduled to begin making ADA compliant sidewalk and ramp enhancements on all three roadways starting with US 84 in Sudan,” said Steve Perez, a Littlefield area engineer for the state. “Work on the sidewalks and ramps in Levelland should start late March and in Farwell late summer 2020.”

Additionally, TXDOT will begin a $25.5 million rebuild.

Motorists should expect lane closures throughout the work zones, and are urged to be patient and drive slowly.

The project is expected to go through late 2021.
