All-regional basketball teams named

The North-South All-Star Games have been delayed. The New Mexico High School Coaches Association is still waiting to determine the final rosters for the basketball games.

But at least it has a prospect pool.

The association released its all-regional basketball teams Wednesday for large-school and small-school teams.

The regional teams will form the North and South All-Star rosters, with the senior-only games scheduled for July 26-29 in Albuquerque. The games were originally scheduled for June in Las Cruces, but delayed out of COVID-19 pandemic concerns.

Only football, volleyball and basketball all-star games are scheduled due to the cancellation of school and spring sports.

Small-school includes classes 1A through 3A, while large-school includes 4A and 5A schools. In each case, the northwest and northeast regional teams will be pared down to create the North team and the southwest and southeast regional teams will be pared down to create the South team.

The following local players were selected for the southeast all-regional teams:

• Boys large-school: Bryce Cabeldue (Clovis), Dewayne Dawson (Clovis), Ro Morgan (Clovis), Kellan Hightower (Portales).

• Boys small-school: Tristan Sena (Melrose), Luke Phipps (Texico), Chisum Rush (Grady), Dylan Valentine (Melrose), Tyce Delk (Elida), Ruger Horton (Texico), Haiden Padgett (Dora).

• Girls large-school: Annabelle Martinez (Clovis).

• Girls small-school: Brette DeVaney (Melrose), Nataley Mondragon (Melrose), Shannon May (Melrose), Ashley Hill (Texico), Randi Crandall (Dora), Anahi Chavez (Floyd).

The association is unsure when it will select the final rosters, as mass gathering restrictions have prevented a selection meeting from taking place.

The North-South All-Star football games started in 1941 and the basketball games in 1947. Games have been played every year since 1946, with football games canceled from 1942 to 1945 due to World War II.

Buffs dominate all-state teams — Melrose, which swept the Class 1A basketball crowns, took the lion’s share of area all-state selections, released by the NMHSCA.

A total of 11 players from Curry and Roosevelt schools were selected to the all-state teams, with six of them from Melrose.

On the boys side, Buffalo senior Tristen Sena and junior Tate Sorgen were 1A first-team selections, where they were joined by Grady’s Chisum Rush. Second-team boys selections for the area were Clovis’ Bryce Cabeldue in Class 5A, Texico’s David Davalos in 2A, Elida’s Tyce Delk and Melrose’s Dylan Valentine.

Two Melrose girls made the Class 1A first-team, senior Nataley Mondragon and junior Hailey Martin. Second-team girls selections for the area were Texico senior Ashley Hill in 2A and Melrose senior Shannon May in 1A.
