'Twilight Zone' or 'Groundhog Day' - strange times indeed

It’s strange times we’re living in for sure.

I told someone the other day it’s like “The Twilight Zone.” Truth is my days in the age of COVID-19 are becoming a little bit like “Groundhog Day.” Each day plays the same except for the newscast, which is starting to run together as well.

Some different and even pleasant things are happening too.

The nesting dove on our patio now has two chicks hatched out in her tumbleweed nest. My wife first noticed them. I quickly slipped outside and from atop a patio chair confirmed two nestlings.

My wife wasn’t real pleased when she learned the chicks would be fed with regurgitated “crop milk” instead of the parents bringing worms or grasshoppers. She was pleased to learn that Daddy Dove would be pulling his weight in the feeding and nesting process and not just another deadbeat dad.

It’s been amazing that we’ve actually received some our fair share of moisture this spring. It did cause the weeds to shoot up to waist-high overnight but the yard wasn’t as dusty as it normally is on the first mowing of the year. My allergies appreciated that but not the tree and weed pollen.

What about that beautiful spring snow this past week? It was tough to see all the bloomed out fruit trees and the lilacs and irises covered in snow but it was pretty at the same time.

My screen time is normally pretty great on a normal week but it’s really been even greater since I’ve been a shut-in. The good thing is I’ve been able to connect with church family online every Sunday and I’ve even made several Wednesday night Bible classes online. My wife and I haven’t been able to make the Wednesday night work lately but I can start it on the computer and listen while I’m working on supper. I’ve appreciated that part and may lobby for the live feed to continue after the lockdown is over. But I can’t wait to get back in the church building on Sunday.

The good thing about online services is that it’s really easy to invite hundreds of Facebook friends to worship with the click of a button. I’ve had friends and family from near and far join in when we’re online. Makes me wonder why I’m not better at inviting folks to come to church with me at the building. Message received, God.

I’ve also been blessed by Facebook friends sharing devotionals live online. Some I’m sure had been doing it all the time, some maybe not, but it seems more important right now to make the time to connect that way.

I’ve also had friends who have posted their own little concerts from home. I’m not talented enough to play music. I can carry a tune if I have a big enough bucket so it’s special when they share.

One night I connected with one friend playing guitar as I was getting ready for bed. The dialog was pleasant and he was taking requests so I said sing me a lullaby — and he did.

Strange times indeed.
