Students honored for contributions to their teams

PORTALES — Brook Leger and Mazin Richards didn’t wait long before making solid contributions to their Eastern New Mexico University Greyhound teams. And each was honored as the school’s top freshman athlete for the 2019-20 athletic year, according to a Wednesday school release.

The university had announced top athletes in each class over the preceding days.

Leger went 4-1 in the pandemic-shortened softball season with 36 strikeouts in 30 innings of work. She posted an ERA of 4.20.

Richards led all Lone Star Conference football players with 12.5 sacks, the seventh-highest total in all of Division II.

He was a second-team All-LSC selection and a third-team All-Super Region Four selection.

Pair of students honored

Two ENMU students with the sports information office were among 18 recognized by the Lone Star Conference for excellence in their jobs and the classroom.

Senior Charlotte Collins-Blaize and junior Raelynn Dusenberry were named to the honoree list, which required a 3.3 grade-point average and a minimum of 24 semester hours at the institution.

Spirit squad tryouts coming

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tryouts for the 2020-21 ENMU sprit squad will be conducted through video submission.

A finalist pool will be selected from the submissions, and those selections will attend a practice to be evaluated on team dynamic, versatility and preferred skills.
