New principal selected

Rodolfo Arceo has been selected as new principal at Lockwood Elementary, according to a release from Clovis Municipal Schools.

Arceo, who first joined the district in 2011 as a Spanish teacher at Clovis High School, will begin his new position this week. He replaces Debbie Westbrook, who was selected in January as the district’s deputy director of child nutrition and well being.

A 2006 graduate of Portales High School, Arceo holds a bachelor’s degree in modern and classical languages from Eastern New Mexico University and a master’s in education administration from Wayland Baptist University.

“Growing up I faced challenges in school due to the fact I only spoke Spanish, but I had one goal in mind and that was to learn English and obtain a college degree,” Arceo said in the release.

“With the support of family and great teachers, I was able to learn English, graduate from high school, and attend college. I understand the obstacles students face when only speaking Spanish and trying to learn a second language. My intent for all students is to be bilingual by the end of their elementary career.”

Clovis High students elected

A pair of Clovis High School juniors have been elected to posts with the New Mexico Family, Career and Community Leaders of America executive council for the 2020-21 school year, according to a release from Clovis Municipal Schools.

Candice Millow will serve as first vice president, while Jovany Gomez will be vice president of membership.

The election, held virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, included a test of FCCLA information, an interview, a situation question and a brief speech.

Officer duties include a training session, planning the fall conference and state meeting and attending Career Technical Student Organizations Day during the New Mexico Legislature.

Clovis JROTC honored

The Clovis High School Air Force Junior ROTC program has been selected as a distinguished unit by AFROTC headquarters, according to a school release.

The award went to 387 units out of a pool of 890 AFJROTC units across the world, and recognizes units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations while providing service to their schools and communities.

The AFJROTC program includes more than 120,000 cadets who perform 1.5 million hours of community service annually.
