ENMU coach adds to staff

PORTALES — New Eastern New Mexico basketball coach Brent Owen has added to his staff, naming Daven Vo as head assistant coach on Monday.

Vo, who has spent the last three years at Butler Community College in Kansas, has 14 years of experience at the junior college and NCAA levels.

“When I was hired as the head basketball coach at Eastern, I knew that my most vital task would be to identify and hire a great assistant coach,” Owen said in a school release. “I wanted to find someone that understood that our biggest purpose is to build great men, someone who has recruiting ties both locally and nationally and had a reputation of being a ‘grinder’ on the recruiting trail with a history of success. Coach Vo checked all of those boxes.”

Vo began coaching as a graduate assistant under Jeff Capel at Oklahoma. He had two stints as an assistant at South Mountain, plus a season at Grand Canyon University, and served a partial season as women’s head coach at South Mountain before four years as the men’s head coach. He was the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association Region I coach of the year following a 22-14 season and No. 8 national ranking, and was also briefly interim head coach at Butler late in the 2018-19 season.

Vo holds a degree in informational systems from St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He and his wife Laura have three children.
