Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Our newspaper would never endorse a political candidate who champions big government.
There’s a need to be clear about that today because a Republican candidate for Congress recently paid Facebook to link one of our newspaper’s news reports to her campaign page.
She was asked to remove the post because it felt like a subtle endorsement of her candidacy. But Alexis Johnson says including our newspaper’s name plate and news coverage as part of her paid advertising campaign is not suggesting the newspaper is endorsing her. So she has declined to remove the post.
Well, at least we agree our newspaper is not endorsing her. Has anybody noticed The News and its ancestors dating to 1929 have always been critical of big government?
The candidate for New Mexico’s Congressional District 3 seat recently needed 828 words to respond to the question, “What is the purpose of government?” A limited-government proponent could have answered the question in one sentence: The purpose of government is to ensure freedom.
Johnson also reports on her campaign Facebook page that she supports public-private business partnerships, meaning she wants taxpayer dollars going to some private businesses.
A lot of politicians — Republicans and Democrats alike — support corporate welfare, but that’s not something our newspaper’s editorials have supported.
It may not be possible to stop Johnson or any political candidate from using our newspaper’s news coverage as part of their advertising campaigns. But we’ll do all we can to try and make them regret it.
