1980: Cannon Air Force Base was celebrating the grand opening of its new commissary.
“The new store provides the most modern supermarket equipment in use today,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.
Cash register receipts were designed to “give customers a complete breakdown of their transaction, including identification of the person who bagged their groceries,” the newspaper reported.
The display floor covered 18,000 square feet and the facility overall was twice the size of the previous commissary, officials said.
It took two years to build and “sells products at cost plus 4 percent,” the newspaper reported.
