High School all-star games are canceled

ALBUQUERQUE — High school sports took a step toward normal last week when practices were allowed, but COVID-19 is still having an impact on the prep sports world: high school all-star games have been canceled.

Other announcements coming Thursday on social media signaled more of the coronavirus’ affect on high school sports. Per the Twitter account of New Mexico High School Coaches Association Director Buster Mabrey, the NMHSCA board has decided to: 1) cancel the 76th annual In-Person Coaches Clinic; 2) cut Mabrey’s salary.

Attempts to contact Mabrey were unsuccessful.

The NMHSCA also announced that it would no longer use the “North vs. South” moniker and format for future all-star events.

“This has been discussed for years,” Mabrey stated in a followup tweet. “It’s almost impossible to balance with so many classifications and the increased schools north. The fighting has becoming embarrassing (Nasty North & Dirty South).”
