Portales council approves 2020-21 budget

PORTALES — The Portales City Council on Tuesday approved the final budget for fiscal year 2021.

“It’s going to be pretty much the same as it was the previous year; the state allowed us to use the previous year’s budget,” Portales City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry said. “Because of COVID-19 it’s very difficult to figure out our revenue, so they proposed the same revenue. We’ll have to keep an eye on it. ... COVID-19 did a lot of things to the state, a lot of things to the community. We just don’t know where our revenues are going to be.”

Martinez-Terry said the council may have to make adjustments on the fly.

The council also approved a fourth-quarter report, which tells the state and the city councilors exactly where the money was spent and what will carry over to the new fiscal year.
