CCC receives five-year grant

Clovis Community College has received a five-year U.S. Department of Education TRIO Student Support Services grant, which will help it support 180 low-income, first-generation or disabled college students.

The $294,725 grant is part of an estimated $314 million awarded through 1,069 grants. The college has received TRIO-SSS grants since 2000. The funds will help CCC provide academic tutoring, mentoring, advising and course selection assistance, assistance completing financial aid applications, activities designed to assist students to apply for admission to four-year programs, counseling and career exploration.

Grant goals are to increase retention and graduation rates for the targeted students, facilitate a transfer to other colleges and foster a supportive climate.

CHS to hold distribution day

Clovis High School will hold a distribution day for student belongings from the 2019-20 school year.

The 1 p.m.-4 p.m. drive-through event will also serve as a distribution for Chromebooks for the upcoming school year if necessary and yearbooks if ordered. Students are asked to bring yearbook receipts if possible, and Chromebook replacement cords are available for $15.

Students have been emailed about the distribution by assistant principals, and are asked to respond to those emails to confirm participation.

Vehicles will enter the distribution at the 21st Street entrance between the tennis courts and football practice field, and leave via the exit to 21st east of the tennis courts.

PHS grad earns scholarship

Trevor Rawdon, a 2020 graduate of Portales High School, received a $1,500 scholarship from America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, according to a release from the Bayer Fund that sponsors the group.

Grow Ag Leaders scholarships, administered by the National FFA Organization, are available to high school seniors and college students pursuing degrees in ag-related fields. To be considered, each applicant is required to receive endorsements from two local farmers.

Rawdon is planning to study agricultural education at Eastern New Mexico University. His scholarship is one of 352 awarded nationwide this year.
