Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University's board of regents on Wednesday met for just over an hour in a special meeting called to update policy and show support for a bond in the upcoming general election.
Both agenda items passed 4-0, with Student Regent Joseph Gergel not attending the telephonic meeting.
The resolution encourages New Mexicans, particularly in Roosevelt, Chaves and Lincoln counties, to vote in the Nov. 3 election and that it supports Bond C. An approval of the recurring bond in the November election would provide more than $150 million statewide to higher education, including $10.3 million for the ENMU system:
• Portales campus ($8 million): The total would fund Roosevelt Science Center renovations for $7 million and provide the remaining total for general infrastructure.
• Roswell campus ($1.8 million): The branch plans to add video surveillance and lighting on the campus.
• Ruidoso campus ($1.5 million): The branch would make general infrastructure improvements.
“This is not only a benefit to ENMU and the students,” Pyle said, “but to the communities as funds will be spent within the communities for construction, supplies and materials, employment of local workforce and out-of-town workers staying, shopping and eating.”
Also at the meeting, a policy revision regarding Title IX was approved. The policy committee will meet again in the upcoming week following a request by Pyle to explore changing a requirement of notice from “with sufficient time” to a specific number of days.
The regents’ next regular meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25.
