Police awaiting test on second skunk; both animals involved in separate tussles with dogs.
CLOVIS — The Clovis Police Department is advising residents to follow city requirements on rabies vaccinations for their pets, following the identification of at least one rabid skunk in recent days.
According to a release from Chief Doug Ford, the CPD’s Animal Control Department has recovered two skunks from the northeast portion of the city — north of 21st Street and east of Norris Street. Both cases involved dogs either fighting or killing the respective skunk.
One of the two skunks has tested positive for rabies, and testing was pending Thursday on the other.
City code requires rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats over the age of four months.
Ford advised residents who notice skunks, foxes or wild animals in city neighborhoods that are acting strangely to contact Animal Control at 575-769-7893 during normal business hours or 575-769-1921, ext. 1 at other times.
