Pages past, Oct. 7: The circus was coming to town

On this date ...

1930: Tickets were on sale for the Robbins Bros. Circus coming to Clovis.

Promotional advertising announced 1,000 people, 300 wild animals, 200 trained horses, 40 clowns and Miss Iowa were part of the show.

1970: Roosevelt County Sheriff Glen Widener was investigating a burglary at Causey Hardware in which $2,500 in merchandise was taken.

Keneth Gardner, the store's owner, said burglars entered through a rear door and carried off 120 pair of men's and boys' trousers, 20 dozen pair of gloves, five dozen short-sleeve shirts, 15 coats, six pair of overalls, 40 cartons of cigarettes, shotgun shells and more.

Officials said about $25 in change was also taken from the cash register.

1975: Portales High School was preparing its presentation of “The Good Doctor,” a comedy by Neil Simon.

The show, at the Portales High School Theatre, was set for 8 p.m. on Oct. 10-11.

Admission was 75 cents for students, $1 for adults.

Multi-tasker …

1965: Diamonds Ltd., with locations in Clovis and Portales, was promoting a “3 in one” countertop device that served as can opener, knife sharpener and bottle opener.

It had a “handy magnetic lid lifter,” “removable stainless steel cutting blade” and a built-in opener that “flips off bottle caps.”

The Iona model came with a five-year guarantee and cost just $9.95.

In sports news …

1955: Fort Sumner was preparing to host “the largest motor racing event ever to be staged in New Mexico,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.

More than 100 foreign sports cars were expected to participate.

The Rio Grande Grand Prix was promoted as the show's highlight, with 90 minutes of racing.

Admission was $1.10 for the races held at the old Fort Sumner Army Air Base.
