PORTALES — For the first time since its inception in 1984, Eastern New Mexico will not induct a Hall of honors class this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A university release explains that it is unable to host a large gathering on campus, and the athletic department does not believe an online ceremony would be proper recognition.
Any nominations being considered for the 2020 class will instead be part of the nominating process for the 2021 class the college anticipates will be larger to cover both years.
The university created its Hall of honors in 1984 with 10 inductees, including national championship basketball coach Harry Miller and Olympians Mike Boit and Rex Maddaford. It has added at least three to its ranks every year, and reached the 200-member mark last year with six inductees.
Nomination forms are available at the Hall of honors section online at goeasternathletics.com.
