Area reaches historically low temperatures

Historically low temperatures hit Curry and Roosevelt Counties last week, with Clovis and Portales seeing numbers in the teens.

Neither Clovis nor Portales saw record-breaking snowfalls as expected, but they did get halfway there.

Clovis saw over 2.5 inches accumulating during the storm. The record is from October of 1936 when 5 inches blanketed the city.

After receiving over 2 inches of snow last week, Portales' 4-inch snowfall record from 1936 remains intact.

Other areas saw their fair share of the winter weather with Floyd recording 4 inches and Texico 2 inches.

Information is according to the National Weather Service offices in Albuquerque and Lubbock.

Record-breaking low temperatures hit Clovis on Monday and Tuesday, where both days sank down to 17 degrees. The previous record for minimum temperature in Clovis for these days was 27 degrees Oct. 26 of last year and 23 degrees on Oct. 27, 2012.

Portales broke record lows every day of the storm. The area started out the week on Monday with a low of 20 degrees, then Tuesday it saw 18 degrees, and the lowest temperature on Wednesday was 18 degrees again.

The record lows those temperatures broke were consecutively 28 degrees Oct. 26 of last year, 25 degrees on Oct. 27, 2012, and 21 degrees on Oct. 28, 1970.

However cold they were, neither Portales nor Clovis broke the record for earliest snowfall. Portales' earliest snow came on Oct. 22, 1936, and Clovis' happened Oct. 16, 1999.

Across the border in Texas, Parmer County broke a few of its own records during the storm.

Temperatures from Monday through Wednesday show Friona hitting all-time lows for those dates. Monday started the record breaking off with a low of 21 degrees, then Tuesday and Wednesday followed with lows of 17 degrees.

The previous lowest temperatures for those dates were 22 degrees set last Oct. 26, 27 degrees Oct. 27, 2012, and 26 degrees Oct. 28, 1970.

While seeing over 2.5 inches of snowfall from the storm, Friona fell short of its October record of 4.5 inches set last year.
