Mayfield posts second-place run

ARLINGTON, Texas - Through two rounds of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Clovis native Shad Mayfield has posted more than $20,000 in earnings and a second-place run at Globe Life Field.

Mayfield, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's world tie-down money leader at $187,399.13, posted his best of his two early performances in the Thursday night opener, when he completed his run in 7.5 seconds. The finish earned him $20,731. The Thursday go was won by Marty Yates of Stephenville, Texas, who earned $26,231 with a run of 7.1 seconds. Only six ropers posted times on the evening.

Friday's second around again saw only six ropers post a time. This time, Mayfield was not one of them as he missed his calf. Yates was again the winner on Friday, earning an identical payoff of $26,231 with a run of 7.2 seconds.

Yates is one of just two ropers to complete runs both evenings. The other is Westyn Hughes of Caldwell, Texas, who placed fifth Thursday and fourth Friday.

Mayfield earned $36,654 at last year's Wrangler NFR after placing in two rounds, and posted a total of $127,075 for 2019.

The rodeo consists of consists of 10 rounds - one round on each of 10 consecutive days; each contestant competes once each day. The rodeo is comprised of the top 15 money earners during the season in each event. World championship titles are awarded to the individuals who earn the most money in his or her event throughout the year.
