Mayfield finishes out of the money

ARLINGTON, Texas - Halfway through the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the runs have been tough ones for Clovis native Shad Mayfield.

Mayfield, after finishing second in the opening round Thursday night, finished out of the money in the next four rounds at Globe Life Field.

Mayfield on Sunday roped his calf, but took a disqualification when the calf flipped over backwards. On Monday, Mayfield was unable to rope his calf.

The rodeo consists of consists of 10 rounds - one round on each of 10 consecutive days; each contestant competes once each day. World championship titles are awarded to the individuals who earn the most money in his or her event throughout the year.

With his second-place finish Thursday night, Mayfield has so far earned $26,231 at the Wrangler NFR. He earned $36,654 at last year's Wrangler NFR after placing in two rounds, and posted a total of $127,075 for 2019.

His year-to-date earnings are $187,399.13.

Saturday saw Mayfield finish his run in 7.5 seconds, which would have put him fifth overall. However, he was assessed a 10-second penalty for breaking the barrier.

Westyn Hughes of Caldwell, Texas, is the only roper to finish in the money all five rounds. He hasn't won a round, but finished second on Sunday and has so far earned $50,347.

The five rounds have seen four different winners, with Marty Yates of Stephenville, Texas, winning the Thursday and Friday rounds. Yates has not finished in the money since, but did earn $52,462 from his two runs.
