Pages past, Jan. 6: Milk prices, a car thief and Red Heads

On this date …

1951: Milk prices were on the rise.

Both the College Dairy and Price's Dairy in Portales announced they would raise retail prices by one cent - from 22 to 23 cents for pasteurized milk and from 23 to 24 cents for homogenized.

Both businesses also announced they would increase the price they pay producers.

Walter Jentgen, manager of Price's Dairy, said the dairy outlook was better than he'd ever seen it. He said the amount of milk being produced locally was 25 percent ahead of a year earlier, but demand was still greater than supply.

1961: Clovis police were searching for a car thief who intentionally crashed the vehicle into a utility pole.

Police said someone put a heavy chunk of concrete on the car's accelerator and sent it down an alley behind the 500 block of Rencher Street.

No one was injured in the incident. The car was reported stolen about an hour before the crash.

1966: The All American Red Heads, a traveling women's basketball team, entertained fans at the Portales High School gym as they defeated the Portales Lions Club men's team, 58-26.

The Lions adjourned to talk strategy at halftime, trailing, 31-16. But the Red Heads remained on the gym floor to show off their fancy dribbling skills and trick-shot accuracy.

Patty Eubank, who was 6-foot-3 inches tall, made a goal by bouncing the ball off her head.

Melvin Littlejohn led the Lions with 14 points. Proceeds from the exhibition went to the Lions' sight conservation fund.

For the best dressed …

1951: Compton's - the man's store in Portales - was “The place to go for the brands you know.”

A semi-annual shoe sale offered men's dress oxfords for $6 in black or brown. Ties were two for $1. Suits were $27 and top coats were $24.

Babies everywhere …

1966: Two boys and two girls were born in one day at the Cannon Air Force Base Hospital. Parents were airman and Mrs. John Wrenn, staff sergeant and Mrs. Ronald W. Crooker, airman and Mrs. Sterling Johnson and second lieutenant and Mrs. George Hellmuth.
