Total of 150 entities across counties receive grant money

SANTA FE — A total of 150 entities in Curry and Roosevelt counties received a total of $2.518 in small-business CARES Act grants awarded by the state of New Mexico late last year because of the economic hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most of the awards were between $10,000 and 25,000 — 51 awards of $10,000, 35 awards of $15,000 and 22 awards of $25,000. Five different recipients received the top grant award of $50,000 — the Community Services Center in Portales, the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton Big Country Ford, High Plains Development Corporation and Laura Leal.

The 150 awards included 112 in Curry County and 38 in Roosevelt County.

They were part of the coronavirus relief grants awarded by the New Mexico Finance Authority after the state legislature during a November special session earmarked $100 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.

According to a news release earlier in January from the finance authority, a total of 6,642 businesses in New Mexico received a grant.

The authority received 14,125 grant applications totaling $156 million in requests during the application period from Dec. 7 to Dec. 18. The state awarded 60% of the grants to businesses in urban areas and 40% in rural areas.

Businesses receiving grants included restaurants, hotels, retail stores, nonprofit organizations, manufacturers, accountants and more. Grants ranged from $2,000 to $50,000, with an average award of $15,000, the release stated.

The Department of Finance Administration provided The News with a spreadsheet of all the grant awards and applicants in the state.

A total of 155 local entites — 121 in Curry and 34 in Roosevelt — applied but did not receive an award.
