Clovis schools expanding hybrid learning

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools district will expand its hybrid education model to middle and high school students on Feb. 16. Those grade levels were forced into remote learning by the COVID-19 pandemic about 11 months ago.

Students will attend in three separate cohorts:

• A, which attends school in person Mondays and Tuesdays and goes remote the rest of the week.

• B, which goes remote Monday through Wednesday and attends in person Thursday and Friday.

• C, which goes entirely remote.

In advance of the Feb. 16 start date, students in sixth and 10th grades will have a mandatory in-person transition day next week to help them acclimate to their new schools.

Sixth-grade students who are entering the middle school designation at either Gattis, Marshall or Yucca will have their in-person transition day either Feb. 11 (Cohort A) or Feb. 12 (Cohort B).

Sophomores in their first year on the Clovis High School main campus will have their in-person transition day either Monday (Cohort A) or Feb. 11 (Cohort B).

The first day of in-person instruction for all grades will be Feb. 16 for Cohort A, following the Presidents Day holiday, and Feb. 18 for Cohort B.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, in her Jan. 26 State of the State address, announced school districts would have the option to return to hybrid school the week of Feb. 8.

Clovis Superintendent Renee Russ told board of education members during their regular meeting later that night the district was excited to bring all grades into in-person learning but said there were still logistical matters to look at and didn’t commit to a specific date.

The district plans to provide further communication to parents that is specific to each school. Questions regarding cohorts or other student-specific matters should be directed to the student’s respective school.

Portales schools are set to return to hybrid learning on Tuesday.
