Pages past, Feb. 10: A time for thieves and your Valentine

On this date …

1951: Burglars and thieves had a busy weekend in Clovis. The Clovis News-Journal reported four businesses, the Clovis Country Club, two parked cars and 17 parking meters had been victimized.

One parking meter, located just a half block from the police station, was carried away “on the post it was fastened to.”

The Ranchers and Farmers Café and the Cattle Capitol Café were broken into for the second time in two weeks. Burglars hit a cigarette machine, a juke box and pinball machines in the restaurants, making off with about $85 in change.

Burglars were “routed” in their attempt to rob Clovis Farm Machinery at 201 S. Walnut when “a gas chamber on the safe was set off,” the newspaper reported.

1956: In Clovis police reports:

• A 19-year-old Clovis man was arrested for being intoxicated and using abusive language in a public place. He pleaded guilty and was fined $25.

• A 25-year-old man “believed to be in this country illegally,” was arrested at Memorial Hospital and was being held in the city jail until “proper authorities” could arrive, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

• A 34-year-old man had been arrested near the Santa Fe depot for being drunk and trespassing. He was released pending a hearing.

1961: The chairman of Portales Lions Club reported a pancake feast raised $560 for the club's sight-saving program.

R.L. Borden said the club had served more than 1,500 pancakes with “long lines of hungry customers through all the meal hours.”

For your Valentine …

1961: Alexander's New Mexico Drug Co. was “Portales' complete drug store,” according to newspaper ads.

Alexander's recommended Pangburn's Western-style chocolates as the “perfect expression of your Valentine sentiment.”

Alexander's was located at 209 S. Main.

Also for your Valentine …

1971: Joe's Flowers in Portales had a Valentine's Day suggestion: “If she's sweeter than candy … send her flowers.”

Roses, boxed or arranged, were $12 per dozen.

Joe's was located at 1400 S. Ave. C.
