Vega holds off late Farwell comeback

CANYON — Vega’s girls went on an early 23-1 blitz and held off a late Farwell comeback on Monday to post a 55-47 victory over the Lady Blue in a playoff seeding tiebreaker game played at Canyon H.S.

The win means the Lady Longhorns (18-7) will be No. 1 seed for District 3-2A in the University Interscholastic League playoffs. Farwell (18-10), as the No. 2 seed, faces Hale Center in the bi-district round at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on Thursday at Sundown.

Farwell and Vega finished 7-1 in district play, with each winning on the other’s court.

The Lady Blue had three two-point leads before junior Maci Hartsell’s 3-pointer put Vega in front for good at 7-6 and started the Lady Longhorns’ surge, which carried through the second quarter and gave them a 27-7 halftime lead.

Farwell was down 38-13 before coming alive and finishing the third stanza on a 9-1 surge. The Lady Blue then scored 25 points in the final period, pulling to within 53-47 on a Charlie May Trimble 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
