Information on making a kissing ball or pomander, using fabric scraps to make personalized cards and decorating for each season will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Thursday (all times Mountain).
Casey Schwartz will demonstrate how to make a kissing ball or pomander which are fun spheres of flowers to hang, carry or just leave on the table. She is the owner/partner of Flower Duet in Redondo Beach, California.
Patty Dunn is the owner of All Dunn Designs in Corpus Christi, Texas, and she’s going to show how to use fabric scraps and fussy cutting to create unusual personalized cards. She’ll also show how she applies fabric to the card stock.
PartyLite consultant, Christine Alt will show how to change decorations with each season by using clear glass candle holders. She suggests starting with timeless, versatile accessories that lend themselves to different candles. PartyLite is in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Information on making easy belts, teaching blind students to “feel color”, and customizing nesting tables will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” noon Tuesday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
Pat de Santis, Wrights in West Warren, Massachusetts, will demonstrate some easy ways to make several belts that are very economical and fashionable at the same time.
Designer Kim Deneault uses textured paper for quilt designs which enables blind students to “feel color.” She’ll show one of her patterns that has been adapted for tactile paper. Her company is Raggedy Reverse Appliqué, and she’s from Lincolnton, North Carolina.
Bruce Johnson, furniture refinishing expert with Minwax in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, will show how to customize nesting tables with stenciled designs and water-based stains.
Kissing balls or pomanders
• Floral Foam: We are using a 3-inch diameter sphere of Oasis Floral Foam
• Waxed Floral Twine: 1 yard
• Spray Mums: 1.5 bunches
• Two sided ribbon: 1 yard
Prepping the foam sphere: Using 1 yard of waxed floral twine, wrap the foam so that there is a loop at the top of the sphere in order to attach the ribbon at the end of the design. This works well as a two-person job. One to hold the twine on the top of the sphere and one to tie the twine.
Design Principles: This design can be accomplished using small face flowers that don’t stick out very far. Good choices include: daisy mums, button mums, spray mums and carnations.
TIP: Cut the stems of the mums only about 1.5 inches long. Be careful as you push each stem into the foam so that the petals of the flowers don’t fall out!
First: If the stems are not very strong, it may be good to pre-poke the foam with a small pick or other stem — so the stems will slip easily into the foam.
Second: After securing twine on to the foam, start adding the mums in a line starting from the top — following along the line of the twine.
Finally: Keep adding mums next to the first line of mums so that you cannot see any of the green foam or until all of the foam is covered evenly.
