Five Portales firefighters honored at city meeting

PORTALES - Five Portales firefighters were honored at the Portales City Council meeting Tuesday night at the Memorial Building.

Firefighters Gavinn Shultz, Trevor Chacon, Michael Gonzalez, Jonathan Montiel and James Bray were all recognized for completing their Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications, while Montiel and Bray also received their one-year challenge coins.

"Every bit of training we get helps make everyone in the community a little bit safer," Fire Chief T.J. Cathey said.

Artie James was pinned in honor of his promotion to lieutenant, and Duane Rogers was pinned in honor of his promotion to second lieutenant.

Portales city councilors approved purchasing a new Portales Area Transit System (PATS) wagon on a state purchasing agreement.

Public Works Director John DeSha said the purchase of the vehicle will not cost the city anything, because the funds will be supplied by a state grant.

City councilors also approved a resolution declaring the intent of the city to submit an application to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for fiscal year 2021-22 Local Government Road Funds (LGRF).

DeSha said the road department is looking into a process called microseal for resealing roads that will be a "bigger bang for our buck." He said the funds will be to rehabilitate 18th Street from Avenue I to D in 2022. He said this year, the department will work on 18th Street from New Mexico Drive to Avenue I, with Avenue O to New Mexico Drive having been rehabilitated in 2020.
