1946: Superintendents from the New Mexico Education Association were recommending pay raises for all school teachers.
Superintendents numbering more than 75, from all sections of New Mexico, had recommended teacher salary increases of at least $200 per year to their various city and county governing boards.
Starting teachers were receiving annual pay of $1,500 to $1,800, The Associated Press reported. The new recommendation was for a minimum salary of $2,000 annually for beginning teachers.
The changes were inspired by “soaring living costs and an acute shortage of teachers in New Mexico,” AP reported.
1956: RCA Victor announced its new Clock-TV “that turns itself on when your favorite show begins.”
“With the new Teletimer 21, you need never miss your favorite TV show again,” a newspaper ad stated. “Just set the clock and your TV turns on - automatically.”
Sets were for sale at Doc & Tom's Radio & TV Lab, 113 E. Sixth in Clovis. The phone number was 5032.
“We don't meet competition … we make it,” the Doc & Tom ad declared.
1976: Buyers from nine states had bid on 115 Texas longhorn cattle in Clovis. Officials at Ranchers and Farmers Livestock Auction described it as “the first major sale of the historic breed since the end of the great cattle drives of the Old West.”
The animals were mostly sold as breeding stock.
In all, they brought $47,000, including one cow-calf combination that sold for $1,400, the Clovis News-Journal reported.
Something to call home about …
1961: Dick Brittain, Clovis' manager of the Mountain States Telephone Co., had hit the season's first hole-in-one at the Clovis Country Club.
He aced the No. 7 hole and picked up $150 in golfing merchandise for his feat.
Wednesday was grocery day …
1961: Piggly Wiggly grocery stores offered double Green Stamps on Wednesdays. Weekly specials included four cans of Star Kist tuna for $1, Kleenex table napkins for 27 cents per box and ShurFresh crackers - two 1-pound packages for 39 cents.
