The Gattis Cubs completed an undefeated abbreviated season with a 20-8 win over Texico for the city championship. The Cubs got two touchdowns from Shawn Schiller and one from Peyton Harris. The team was led defensively by Schiller, Harris, Nicholas Tackitt, Tanner Fuller and Jacob Wright. The 14 players — eight eighth-graders and six seventh-graders — outscored their opponents 104-14.
In its season opener, the Cubs blanked Marshall 51-0, with three touchdowns from Schiller. Harris added two touchdowns, a two-point conversation and an extra-point kick. Also scoring a touchdown each were Hayden Harris, Christian Gomez and McKenzie Rogers. Harris and Schiller each had an interception, and Fuller recovered a fumble.
The Cubs defeated Yucca 34-6. Peyton Harris passed for a touchdown and threw a pair of two-point conversions. Also scoring touchdowns were Gomez, Rogers and Hayden Harris. Defensively, Peyton Harris and Lucas Carpenter each had a fumble recovery, while Hayden Harris notched an interception.
