FLOYD - The Dora Coyotes got off to a bit of a slow start, but recovered nicely behind the scoring exploits of senior running back Alex Urioste on Saturday to post a 33-8 victory over Floyd.
Urioste scored four touchdowns for Dora (1-2), which turned an 8-0 first-quarter deficit into a 12-8 lead at halftime and pulled away from there.
Sophomore Gabriel Love put the Broncos (0-3) in front in the opening stanza with a 50-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Juan Alba-Beltran, and Love added the 2-point PAT kick.
Urioste scored both of Dora's second-quarter TDs, and added two more in the second half. The other Coyotes score was provided by sophomore fullback Bryson Paxton.
The teams close out the regular season this weekend as Dora hosts Elida in a 7 p.m. clash on Friday and Floyd entertains Clovis Christian in a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
Lake Arthur 38, Elida 21 - The Lake Arthur football program has struggled mightily in recent years, largely because of numbers issues, but the Panthers appear to have turned it around this season.
Lake Arthur (2-0) built a 19-0 halftime lead against two-time 6-man state runnerup Elida on Saturday and went on to claim a 38-21 victory at Elida.
"We played hard," Tigers coach Jereme Woodruff said. "Lake Arthur's got kind of a senior squad, but the boys played hard all the way through.
"I couldn't be prouder of our guys. They're a young squad."
Senior quarterback-linebacker Adrian Guillen led the way for the Panthers on both sides of the ball.
"He's a really good player," Woodruff said.
Sophomore Payton Calloway put some life into the home crowd by returning the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, and the Tigers (1-2) got within 32-21 with about four minutes left. But Lake Arthur iced the win with another touchdown.
