Pages past, March 28: A series of burglaries, and honoring vets

On this date ...

1961: Police had arrested three people who claimed responsibility for burglaries at 35 Clovis-area businesses.

The suspects, ages 15, 17 and 21, had most recently been questioned about seven nighttime burglaries that had occurred in one evening.

The value of property stolen was in excess of $1,500, police said.

All of the burglaries had taken place in the previous six months.

1961: Attendance at Conchas Lake near Tucumcari had dropped in 1960, though officials were disputing the numbers.

New Mexico's Department of Development claimed attendance was 460,000 for 1959, but just 370,000 in 1960.

The state's Game and Fish Department argued attendance was at 396,000 in 1959, compared to 376,000 in 1960.

Cause of the decline, however much it was, had been blamed on unusually severe winds and rain between March and September in 1960.

Average rainfall in the area was double the normal in 1960, according to Doug Jester, a fisheries biologist. Jester predicted record attendance in 1961, assuming the weather and economy held up. Jester predicted 425,000 people would visit Conchas Lake in 1961.

1976: The Floyd community had recognized nine men killed during World War II as “distinguished citizens.”

Those honored were Leo Eminger, Pecos Finley, Billy Gregory, Earl Richardson, John Stanford, Willie Blakeley, Fred Barr, Gurley Richards, and John Andes.

Recognition came on the final night of the annual Floyd Country Jamboree.

Henry Elliott was honored as Floyd's outstanding citizen for 1976.

A deal on a clock-radio …

1961: Shaw's Jewelers at Fourth and Main in Clovis was promoting the Westinghouse clock-radio. It was “ideal in (the) kitchen, workshop or any room,” according to a newspaper advertisement. The special low price was $19.95 or $1 a week on credit.

Sheriffs headed to meeting …

1971: Bob Stephens was Curry County sheriff and president of the New Mexico Sheriff's Association. The association was planning to meet in Santa Fe to discuss recent bills passed by the state Legislature and to talk about factors that might strengthen sheriff's departments across the state.
