Cavegirls top CHS in overtime

CLOVIS — The Clovis High girls soccer team battled hard in Saturday’s District 4-5A match against Carlsbad at Leon Williams Stadium. The Lady Wildcats simply couldn’t find the back of the net.

Carlsbad’s Allie Meyers finally broke the ice just over six minutes into overtime, and the Cavegirls remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over CHS.

Veteran Clovis girls coach Traci Sievers was pleased with the effort, although she would have liked a different result.

“Everybody who was on the field played hard,” Sievers said. “The things we talked about at halftime, we were able to do.

“We’ve played bad games and won. This game, I think we got better because of how we played and who we played. I think Carlsbad is the best team we played this season.”

Cavegirls coach Misty Long has always maintained that Leon Williams Stadium is a tough place for a visitor. Still, with the win Carlsbad (5-0, 3-0 district) maintained a stranglehold on the district title — and was to close the regular season this week with home matches against all three of its 4-5A foes.

“Coming here is always a hard game,” Long said. “Coach Sievers always puts together a fighting team, and they did a great job of putting us under pressure.”

The Lady Cats (3-2-1, 1-2) were slated to play at Hobbs on Tuesday night and at Carlsbad on Thursday before closing the campaign at home on Saturday against Roswell High.

Lady Rams edged by Artesia — Following a 5-0 District 4-4A win over Portales in mid-March, Artesia girls soccer coach Tim Trentham predicted Saturday’s rematch would be a lot tougher.

The Lady Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 victory on their home turf, but they certainly had to work harder for it.

Madison Segura scored the lone goal for Artesia (3-5, 2-2) in the 24th minute, and the Lady Bulldogs made it stand up. PHS goalkeeper Dani Exiga helped keep her squad in the game, making 12 saves.

“We definitely improved in that we were able to hold our shape on the field,” Lady Rams coach Bonnie Britton said. “We did a great job of passing the ball.

“Our biggest (problem) is not having enough depth on the bench to be able to sub girls in.”

This week, the Lady Rams (0-4, 0-4 district) wrap up their season. They were to host Lovington on Tuesday before finishing at Roswell Goddard on Saturday.

In boys action on Saturday at Greyhound Stadium, Artesia (5-1-1, 3-1) broke away from a scoreless halftime tie to post a 3-1 victory over the Rams (0-6, 0-4). The PHS boys played at Lovington on Tuesday night, and face Goddard in a 1 p.m. match at Greyhound Stadium on Saturday to close out the season.
