ELIDA — Elida’s boys rebounded from a 22-point loss at Grady in their season opener, dominating early and hanging on down the stretch for a 49-44 District 4-1A victory over Gateway Christian on Tuesday night.
The Tigers (1-1, 1-0 district) held the Warriors to just 13 first-half points in building a double-digit margin. Gateway (0-1, 0-1) got as close as three points in the final stanza.
Junior Rylan Creighton scored 16 points and sophomore Jose Jimenez added 11 for Elida.
In other boys action on Tuesday:
Dora 37, Floyd 30 — Junior Cache Skelley scored 13 points and the host Coyotes (1-0, 1-0 District 4-1A) pulled away in the final period against their intracounty rivals. Senior Eric Terry led all scorers with 17 points for the Broncos (1-1, 1-1).
Clovis Christian 70, San Jon 26 — Coming off a big win on Saturday at Logan, the Eagles were in cruise control against the Coyotes, building a 46-12 halftime lead in a District 4-1A matchup at CCS.
Sophomore Carter Teune led the way for the Eagles (3-0, 3-0 district) with 24 points, while sophomore Noah Gershon added 15 and junior Dawson Teune scored 10. Senior Chad Becarra had seven points and sophomore Tristian Reed six for the Coyotes (0-2, 0-1).
Melrose 67, Tucumcari 23 — At Melrose, 10 players scored with senior Tate Sorgen (19 points, 14 rebounds) and junior Logan DeVaney (12 and 10) notching double-doubles as the Buffaloes dominated in their season opener, rolling to a 19-4 lead at the quarter.
Junior Brandon Garcia added 14 points for Melrose. Junior Andrew Henderson-Clark led the Rattlers (0-2) with 12 points.
Logan 72, Grady 46 — The host Longhorns dominated the middle two quarters, outscoring Grady 39-13 during that time. Senior Dante Sanchez scored 22 points for Logan (1-1, 1-1), while junior Kaden Riggs had 19 points and senior Wyatt Wright had 15.
In April 3 (Saturday) games:
Clovis Christian 69, Logan 62 — Four players accounted for all but five of the Eagles’ points at Logan — Carter Teune and senior Tyler Lingnau with 21 each and Dawson Teune and Gershon with 11 apiece. It was the first win for CCS over the Longhorns in more than a decade.
Clovis Christian, which outscored Logan 19-12 in the final period, missed its first 12 3-point attempts of the game but finished 14-of-36 for the game from long range, including five each by Carter Teune and Lingnau. Logan was led by 19 points from Riggs and 17 from Sanchez.
Grady 66, Elida 44 — At Grady, junior Jordan Verble led three Bronchos in double figures with 27 points, while freshman Zane Rush added 18 and senior Isaiah Mitchell 15.
For the Tigers, sophomores Dalyn Taylor and Mason Prichett each notched 10 points.
