TATUM — Trailing by five at halftime, the Texico Wolverines erupted for 23 points in the third quarter on Monday night en route to a 51-36 victory over Tatum.
Sophomore Jahvon Askew scored 16 points and sophomore Max Villarreal added nine for the Wolverines (2-2), who led 38-30 entering into the final stanza and won going away.
The leading scorer for the Coyotes (1-2) was senior Kivan Cardenas with 18 points.
Tatum 35, Texico girls 26 — The Lady Coyotes (3-0) dominated the first and third quarters and held off the Lady Wolverines down the stretch.
Tatum, which led 13-3 after the opening frame, got 10 points from junior Kheyenne Coomes and nine from freshman Valeria Marizcal. Meantime, senior Rachel Phipps tallied a personal-best 19 points for Texico (1-3), which was minus senior inside players Skyler Schaap and Riley Rohrbach due to injury.
In a boys game played on Saturday:
Dora 63, Lake Arthur 48 — The Coyotes broke open a close contest with a 23-4 blitz in the third quarter in District 4-1A at Lake Arthur.
Four players reached double digits for Dora (2-1, 2-0 district) — sophomores Steven Masini with 17 points and Bryson Paxton with 15, and seniors Alex Urioste with 14 and James Rooney with 12.
For the Panthers (0-3, 0-3), senior Adrian Guillen scored 25 points and junior Adrian Rangel had 12.
