Eagles get back on winning track against Coyotes

CLOVIS — Clovis Christian’s boys put an end to a brief two-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 69-48 non-district victory over Dora at the CCS gym.

Senior Noah Gershon and sophomore Carter Teune each had five 3-pointers and 20 points for the Eagles (5-2), while senior Tyler Lingnau added 11. Gershon set a personal scoring high with his output.

CCS trailed by eight points early, but outscored the Coyotes 19-8 in the second canto to build a 13-point halftime lead. Sophomore Steven Masini had 21 points and sophomore Cache Skelley 12 for the Coyotes (2-4).

In other boys action on Saturday:

Elida 64, Cimarron 54 — Senior Teagan Burton scored 20 points and the Tigers improved to 5-1 with a non-district win over the Blue Jays.

The game, originally scheduled as a neutral-site tilt at Logan, was moved to Elida when COVID-19 protocols led to a two-week shutdown at Logan.

The Tigers opened a seven-point halftime lead by outscoring Cimarron 21-15 in the second period. Junior Rylan Creighton added 18 points and sophomore Jose Jimenez 10 for Elida.

Cimarron (3-3) was paced by 28 points from senior Sean Garcia, while senior Cristian Estrada added 10.

Fort Sumner 78, Grady 36 — In a District 6-1A matchup at Grady, the Foxes had a relatively modest 15-9 lead at the quarter, but erupted for 38 points in the second stanza.

Senior Creed West led four players in double figures for Fort Sumner (5-1, 4-1) with 18 points, followed by senior Chance Drake (15), freshman Joaquin Segura (12) and junior Kane Burney (11). For the Bronchos (1-5, 0-5), freshman Zane Rush netted 13 points and junior Jordan Verble had 11.

In girls matchups on Saturday:

CCS 65, Dora 29 — Sophomore Sofia De Groot poured in 26 points and the host Lady Eagles squared their record for the season at 4-4.

Senior Lola De Groot had 15 points and 12 assists while senior Abby Lusk added 17 rebounds for CCS. Meantime, eighth-grader Addie Ainsworth topped the Lady Coyotes (1-3) with eight points.

Fort Sumner 56, Grady 22 — Sophomores Keeli West (20 points) and Avery Cavett (11) keyed the Vixens’ District 6-1A triumph at Grady.

Fort Sumner (5-0, 5-0) led 19-5 at the quarter and never looked back. For the Lady Bronchos (2-5, 1-5), senior Teryn Foote scored nine points.
