Lady Rams prevail in OT over Carlsbad

CARLSBAD — Portales High’s girls might be getting used to this overtime thing.

Well, maybe not, coach Wade Fraze says.

The Lady Rams went to a bonus frame for the second consecutive night on Saturday, pulling out a 48-44 victory over Carlsbad after busting loose for the first 10 points of the extra session.

Junior guard Riley Shillings accounted for eight of those tallies, including a pair of 3-pointers.

“I’m glad they have the character to finish like that,” Fraze said. “We did not get off to too good a start.”

PHS (7-1), which overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Roswell Goddard 63-56 in OT on Friday night, fell behind 15-9 at the quarter in this one and actually trailed most of the way.

Junior Kylyie Paden posted a double-double for the Lady Rams with 16 points and 15 rebounds. While Carlsbad sophomore Allie Myers also had a double-double (11 points, 14 caroms), Fraze said that Paden was effective overall in guarding her.

“Kylyie did a great job of defending Allie Myers,” he said. “We went to a box-and-1 late in the fourth quarter (with Paden on Myers).”

Meantime, Shillings finished with 12 points and took a pair of charges down the stretch, Fraze said. Junior guard Taris Rippee also finished in double digits with 10 points, while senior Kinzie Davis collected 14 rebounds.

The Lady Rams were slated to visit Artesia on Tuesday before ending the regular season at Lovington on Friday in district tilts. At most, they needed to win just one of those games to clinch the outright 4-4A crown.
