CLOVIS - Clovis High's swimmers earned 10 provisional state-qualifying marks on Tuesday as the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats hosted a meet for the first time in more than eight years at the Clovis Aquatic Center.
The Lady Cats took first place in the four-school Clovis Invite, nearly matching their three competitors with 123 team points. Hope Christian was second with 68, followed by Sandia Prep and Hobbs.
On the boys' side, Hobbs claimed team honors with 123 1/2 points while the Cats were second with 96 1/2.
The Lady Cats earned seven of the state-qualifying marks, highlighted by a 1-3-4 finish in the 400 freestyle from freshmen Jakoda Culley and Kiara Morgan and eighth-grader Brynn Longley, who all reached the standard. Meantime, sophomore Shyann Kissinger accomplished the feat by winning the 100 freestyle and finishing second in the 100 backstroke, as did sophomore Chloe Lee with a win in the 50 freestyle.
For the boys, freshman David Reeb earned a qualifying mark in winning the 100 butterfly. Boys and girls 200 medley relays and the boys 400 freestyle relay all earned state qualifying marks as well.
Clovis squads were in action again on Saturday in a meet hosted by Artesia.
Lady Cats edge Lovington - Clovis High's girls won two of three doubles matches on Tuesday to edge past Lovington 5-4 in a tennis dual played at the CHS courts.
Junior Aiya Alsaleh and sophomore Niliyaah Hall teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles, as did junior Charlese Phillips and freshman Lydia Johnson at No. 3. CHS dominated in singles at No. 2 with Alsaleh, at No. 3 with senior Alex Gonzales and No. 4 with Hall to overcome an overheating issue which caused senior Brittney Albin to have to default at No. 1 singles.
Lovington posted an 8-1 win over the Cats in boys competition. The lone Clovis victory came at No. 5 singles, where freshman Titus Wampler posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision over fellow freshman Michael Hein of Lovington.
The next outing for the Cats and Lady Cats is slated for 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host a dual against Portales.
Texico girls win Lovington tourney, CCS boys second - Seniors Emily Delarosa and Grace McDaniel finished second and third individually on Wednesday as Texico claimed the girls team championship in the Lovington Invite golf tournament, played at Lovington Country Club.
The Lady Wolverines finished with a 385 team score while Clovis High came in second at 412, followed by Artesia (422) and Lovington (435).
Delarosa shot 41-49 - 90, finishing six shots behind individual medalist Kelsie Villarreal of Lovington. Meantime, McDaniel came in at 44-49 - 93 as all four Texico players finished in the top 10.
Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats was sophomore Jolei Atkins at 44-52 - 96, good for fifth place.
In boys competition, Lovington outlasted Clovis Christian 334-339 for team honors, followed by Artesia (365), Carlsbad (384) and Clovis (387).
Freshmen Bodee Bratcher and Noah McKay led the way for CCS, shooting respective rounds of 39-42 - 81 and 40-44 - 84
Individual medalist Rial Williams of Lovington shot a 1-over-par 72. The top scorer for CHS was senior Ryan Rowley, who finished 44-43 - 87.
Portales High had three players in the event. The Rams were led by senior Nathan Cota with a 38-42 - 80, while senior Valen Low finished at 42-42 - 84.
CHS golfers return to action on Monday in the Eagle Invite at Hobbs, while the next outing for Portales and Clovis Christian boys and Texico girls is on Thursday in a tournament hosted by New Mexico Military in Roswell.
