ROSWELL - Texico's girls shot a 367 team score and ran away from the field on Thursday in the Coyote Invite golf tournament, hosted by Roswell High at New Mexico Military's golf course.
Clovis High's girls came in second in a field of five full teams, shooting 391 to edge out Lovington by four strokes.
Meantime, Clovis Christian claimed second place in the boys division with a four-man total of 325. Lovington took team honors at 292, with Roswell High third at 336 and Clovis High fourth at 376.
Senior Grace McDaniel finished second individually for Texico with a 42-41 - 83, four strokes behind Roswell Goddard's Jadin Ware. Lady Wolverines senior Emily Delarosa was fifth overall at 47-43 - 90.
Meantime, the Lady Wildcats put together a solid round, led by sophomore Jolei Atkins at 46-47 - 93. Coach Joe Dvozenja said his squad probably still left some strokes out on the course.
"We really didn't putt that well," he said. "I think we had 24 3-putts today.
"The greens were great, but I think we left our short game back in Clovis."
Meantime, Clovis Christian's boys continued their consistent early-season play. Senior Tyler Lingnau led the Eagles at 39-40 - 79, while the other four players were bunched between 81 and 85.
Eagles coach Trent McKay said his team also struggled at times with its putting.
"There's not a lot of separation between our No. 1 and our No. 4 (players)," he said. "If we can just clean up a few things, we should be all right."
The top score for the Clovis boys was turned in by senior Ryan Rowley with a 44-43 - 87. Roswell High's Peyton Jones was the individual winner with a 4-under-par 68, two shots ahead of Lovington's Rial Williams.
The Cats haven't had a full squad for any of their first three meets.
"We've just got to get better," coach Dale Fullerton said. "We have to keep working at it."
Portales High brought three players to the boys division, with senior Valon Low shooting 35-38 - 73, 1-over-par. Seniors Nathan Cota (40-40 - 80) and Baylor Diaz (53-48 - 101) followed.
"Nate shot a pretty normal score, but the others were much better," coach Greg Rowley said. "We're headed in the right direction."
Clovis teams return to action on Monday in the Carlsbad Invite, while the Cats and Lady Cats, Portales and Clovis Christian boys and Texico girls were all be in the Texico Invite at 9 a.m. on Friday at Farwell Country Club. Shotgun starts for both tourneys are set for 9 a.m.
CHS tennis teams sweep Portales - Clovis High's tennis squads posted a pair of wins over Portales on Tuesday at the CHS courts.
The Wildcats blanked the Rams 9-0 in boys action, while the Lady Wildcats notched a 6-3 triumph over PHS.
The Cats won all nine boys matches in straight sets. The closest contest was a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles for freshmen Drew Waltz and Brenin Hillis over the Rams' Paxton Culpepper and Joey Rutler.
Meantime, Clovis was victorious in the Nos. 2-5 singles and at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior Ayia Alsaleh, senior Alex Gonzales and sophomore Niliyaah Hall all posted wins in both singles and doubles.
For the Lady Rams, wins came from senior Laura Blaeser at No. 1 singles and freshman Lorena Fernandez at No. 6, while freshman Maggie Duong and Fernandez teamed up for a three-set win over Lady Cats junior Charlese Phillips and freshman Lydia Johnson at No. 3 doubles.
Clovis and Portales squads were slated to play in the Carlsbad Flighted Invite this weekend.
